Mentor Expectations

Below is Mission:MathMinds expectations for our Mentors during their sessions with their Mentees. Mentors must follow these expectations to provide excellent mentoring quality. Please feel free to contact team@missionmathminds.org if you have any questions.

Class-Block Schedule

Each session consists of 1 hour. Please use the time blocks below to follow a schedule. These times may vary depending on you and your Mentee and what would work best.

Recap: 10-15 minutes

Discuss any school homework problems if that is part of your routine, ask the Mentee how they feel about the topic previously learned, and any other reviews you would like to quickly look over.

Checking Homework: 10 minutes

Please use this time to check over and discuss the homework you have assigned your Mentee.

Class Topic/Topic: 30 minutes

This time is for teaching the material and doing all the practice problems to learn and understand the topic. We recommend asking the Mentee if they understand every so often and have them explain the concept to you. Remember when you are teaching the student the topic, you must teach it to them in the utmost simple words as the topic is new to them.

Reward Time: 5-7 minutes

This is the time to spend on rewards. Sites we recommend for rewards are listed below. Remember, when you are playing the games with your student, you should allow them to win and let them have fun.

Service Hour Entry Form: 3-5 minutes AFTER CLASS

MOST IMPORTANT PART - It is crucial for you to fill out your service hours for each session within 24 hours after your session. Go to the Mentor Service Hours Entry page to fill them out. You may view your service hours on the Service Hours Display after they are submitted. Exceptions of service hours not filled out 24 hours after your session are ONLY allowed under certain circumstances. Please contact team@missionmathminds.org if you are in this situation.

Resources to Pull Problems From

Create an account. Please contact us if you don't know how to create an account. If you are planning on using this site, please realize that your Mentee needs to create an account as well.

This website is for students learning Pre-Algebra and up. This website can be used to extreme challenge problems. This problem-site does focus on trick-problems that a lot of students don't learn, so we recommend doing just a few of the student has mastered their topic.

This site is great for all grades. It has thorough material for all topics and in a curriculum. You also need to create an account for this site; please use your google account.

You can also just tell your student which problems that should be practicing and tell them to write down anything that they had trouble on.

These worksheets are for time-based practice. You can use this as a quick review and enhance the Mentee's speed with the topic. Since everything is digital, you are to download the PDF and send the Mentee the worksheets you want to use. This is based on your preference as to when to do these sheets.

When assigning these worksheets for homework, we recommend telling the Mentee to do 2 a week outside of your class time.

There is Online Practice, so during class, you can have the Mentee share their screen and you may watch them do the problems. This can be much less time-consuming than the above as the Mentee does not have to do any printing.

This is a free program used by many schools. Start by creating an account using your Google account. Please sign-up as a parent. Choose 16 and over. You will need to add Mentees as "children".

This website should be used for homework, such as 15 problems a day and not during class time.

Reward Problem Sites:

As a student-based math program, we know it is crucial to reward students when they accomplish learning in any form. Therefore, we recommend allowing your Mentee to play a fun math game or other math-related rewards your Mentee is interested in. These games should be at the end of class. Here are a couple of sites that you may use.

If you want to create the Kahoots, you must do this before class. You are free to choose any Kahoot that correlates with the topic that the Mentee is learning.

You can even assign these for homework occasionally.

Math playground provides fun math games and can give Mentees a break.

Coolmath Games provides fun math games and can give Mentees a break.

The sites above are approved by Mission:MathMinds. Please do not spend all your class time playing these games. If you have any sites to play games, it must get approved by Mission:MathMinds, so please send us an email and we will let you know if it is acceptable or not.

Creating Class Material

Google Slides

This is a great application for creating class content. For the content itself, you should have a plan from the Mentee's diagnostic test. If you need help with content, please contact M3 as we would be happy to help you.

Zoom Whiteboard, Google Jamboard

If your class is better off just doing numeric problems versus terminology and word problems, then this would be great. You would need to have the problems chosen in advance, but otherwise, this is a good application to use.

Zoom - Video Chat:

Mission:MathMinds does require the use of Zoom for all sessions. It is free and most students already have the app. You may download it or use it online as a web extension on Chrome or Edge.

Zoom is free, for one-to-one Zoom calls, it is unlimited. Please schedule a link for all of your classes.

Service Hours:

The only way to confirm your service hours for each session is to make sure that your Mentee has entered their form (Mentee Session Completion Form) and you have filled out your Service Hours Form. THIS MUST BE COMPLETED IN CLASS TOGETHER BEFORE YOU END CLASS.

You can view your Mentor service hours by going to Mentor Service Hour Entry and seeing your name pop-up. This will only work if you signed in to your site account.

Homework:

Homework is to be said in class and an email is sent afterward including their parents' email. We will provide you with their parents email.

End of Class Email:

As a Mentor, you are required to send an email to the Mentee and parents of what you did in the class, the homework as said previously, and anything else for future reference.

Cancellations:

All session changes, cancellations, etc. must be done 24-hours before the session. This is for both sides, Mentor and Mentee.
