Ruby Arun, Founder and Chief Executive Officer
Ruby Arun is the founder and CEO of Mission:MathMinds, a non-profit organization dedicated to improving math literacy for girls and a student at Fremd High School in Palatine, IL. At a young age, Ruby has been involved in math-related activities including math competitions (AMC8, Mathcounts, and more), placing in the top 5% for many of them. Through her passion for advocating for increased inclusivity and participation from females in math to yield higher female representation and empowerment in STEM fields in the future, she founded Mission:MathMinds and FemaleRoleModels.Org. Recently, Ruby hosted the Mission:MathMinds National Conference, with over 40 girls impacted, as well as hosted the Mission:MathMinds Book Drive for Ukrainian Refugee Children, collecting over 2,000+ books. Ruby is also an enthusiastic member of her community and excels in community service. In 2017, Ruby raised over $1,500 for Hurricane Harvey. Later, Ruby became the President of her K-12’s school Student Council, guiding over 1,000 students through the global COVID-19 pandemic. Ruby has always been a student leader in her community and is an active member of society, acting on important issues.
Kate McCully, Member of Board of Directors
Ms. Kate McCully holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Mathematics from Seattle Pacific University (WA) where she graduated Cum Laude and was a Member of the National Mortar Board. Kate holds a Certificate in Secondary Education and endorsements to teach Mathematics in grades 6-8 and high school grades 9-12 in both Illinois and Washington. She currently works as a middle-school math teacher at Holy Family Catholic Academy in Inverness, IL. Kate has collaborated in math education research analyzing the problem-solving strategies among pre-service teachers in relation to confidence and mindset. Her classroom and educational philosophies are heavily inspired by the research of Drs. Jo Boaler and Carol Dweck, and her goal is to inspire and challenge young women to be open to developing a “mathematical mindset.”
Shruthi Senthil, Associate Director of Mentoring Program
Shruthi Senthil joined Mission Math Minds in April 2021 during her sophomore year of high school. She has been doing Indian Classical dance and music for 11 years. Shruthi is very passionate about community service and loves to help make a difference. She has devoted many hours of service to various organizations such as SKY Kids Storytime, National Honors Society, Community Threads, and Amita hospital. Shruthi loves math, and is committed to helping young girls reach their full potential in STEM. She is an active Mentor at Mission:MathMinds, and is currently a senior at William Fremd High School.
Julia Yankee, Director of Mentoring Program
Julia Yankee joined Mission:MathMinds in April 2021 as a sophomore in high school. She is committed to creating a safe space for all people to express themselves and find their passions. She sings in, and is publicity leader for her high school choir, and co-founded the Sign Language Club at her high school. She is interested in the sciences and encourages young girls to explore opportunities in STEM. Julia is an active Mentor at Mission:MathMinds, and is currently a junior in high school.
Cheryl Nowak, Academic and Curriculum Advisor
Mrs. Cheryl Nowak serves as the Chairperson of the Mathematics Department at Saint Viator High School.
